Welcome to Week 16, and Round 2 of the Fantasy Playoffs! If you made it through last week (or had a bye), and you’re still alive for a title, congrats! If not, and you’re reading my column anyway, thank you for your support and patronage.
It’s almost Christmas. The days are as short as they get, the weather is getting colder, the stakes are high, and for fantasy players, it’s win or go home. Injuries (see below) continue to be a huge issue that fantasy football managers have to navigate. I’ll try to help you field your best lineup this week.

Week 15 Stats of the Week:
Running bit: No team in the NFC South is above .500, and no team in the AFC North is below .500.
Jalen Hurts was 23-2 as a starter in regular season games since the start of the 2022 season, before losing his last 3 starts.
Just 5 days after being shut out by the Vikings, the Raiders scored 63 points against the Chargers, a franchise record and the second highest game total since the 1970 merger (MIA, 70 points vs. DEN in Week 3 of this season).
Raiders 42, Chargers 0 was the second largest halftime deficit in NFL history (in 2009, the Patriots led the Titans by 45 at the half).
Raiders 63-Chargers 21 was (unsurprisingly) a Scorigami, the 8th of this season.
More on this insane game: 8 different Raiders scored a TD, which is the most in a game since the 1950 Rams did the same thing.
At the start of the 4th quarter on Saturday, the Vikings had allowed only 3 points through their last 7 quarters.
Lions rookies combined to score 5 TDs on Sunday. That’s the most in a game for rookies from one team since 1979 (BUF).
Sam LaPorta had 3 of those TDs, and has 9 on the season. He scored a total of 5 TDs in 4 years at Iowa.
LaPorta is just the third TE to have 700+ receiving yards and 7+ TDs as a rookie. The other 2 are both hall of famers (Mike Ditka, 1961, and John Mackey, 1963).
The Jets had 4 yards of offense at halftime in Miami on Sunday. That’s the lowest first half total for any team since 2015.
In 2 games against Miami this season, the Jets’ “offense” scored 7 points, total.
The Jets have missed the postseason for the 13th straight year. That’s not only the NFL’s longest current streak; it’s the longest current streak in any of the 4 major sports.
31 year old Raheem Mostert has 20 TDs from scrimmage this season. He had 19, total, in the regular season before 2023.
Josh Allen now has 10 games this season with both a rushing and passing TD— that’s the most in NFL history.
The Bills had 49 rushes and completed just 7 passes in their demolition of Dallas.
The only players who have more yards from scrimmage than James Cook this season are CMC and Tyreek Hill.
Jake Browning is the first QB in NFL history to win 2 of his first 4 starts in OT. He’s also the first QB ever to have 1,000+ yards and complete over 75% of his passes over his first 4 starts.
Derrick Henry has set a bunch of impressive records against the Texans. On Sunday he set another. He had 20 touches for a total of 10 yards. That’s the first time in NFL history that a player had less than 15 yards on at least 20 touches.
Jimmy Graham has 6 catches on the season…And 4 receiving TDs.
Baker Mayfield is the first visiting QB to have a perfect passer rating (158.3) at Lambeau Field.
After Joe Flacco’s heroics on Sunday, the Browns have gotten at least one game-winning drive from 4 different QBs this year (that’s the most by a team since at least 1950).
Flacco’s 212 yards in the 4th quarter were the most by any QB this season and the most by a Browns’ QB since 1991.
On the flip side, the Bears have now blown 3 games where they had a double digit lead in the 4th quarter, which is tied for the highest season total ever.
CMC has 30 TDs in his first 25 games as a 49er. Only Gale Sayers (31, Bears) had more in his first 25 games with a team.
CMC scored 7 TDs in 2 games against the Cardinals this season. That ties the record for the most TDs by a player against one team in a season.
CMC and Deebo both have at least 5 rushing and 5 receiving TDs this season. That’s the first time in the Super Bowl era that 2 or more teammates have done that.
Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers are on pace to be Top-3 in the NFL in scoring, and total, rushing, and passing offense. No team has done that since the 2000 Broncos, who were coached by Kyle’s father, Mike.

Week 16 Rides, Fades, and Sleepers
INTRO
For those who are familiar with this column, you know the drill. For everyone else - The Rides, Fades, and Sleepers is an analysis of players that I think are primed for an especially strong or poor performance, in many cases, as compared to consensus expectations. This isn’t a straight-up Start/Sit exercise, and as a general rule, always start your studs. I’ll rarely list the very top options at a position as “Rides” because those players are matchup-proof and are almost always expected to have strong performances, plus you don’t need me or anyone else telling you to start Allen, CMC, Lamb, or Kelce every week. While this analysis is intended for season-long play, it works for DFS formats too. Half PPR scoring and Expert Consensus Rankings (ECR) are used for the column.
Each week, I’m picking a Ride of the Week, a Fade of the Week, and a Sleeper of the Week at QB, RB, WR, and TE. The rules: The Ride of the Week can’t be a truly elite option, the Fade of the Week can’t be someone who almost nobody is starting anyway, and the Sleeper of the Week has to be an actual sleeper, from down in the rankings.
The Rides, Fades and Sleepers had a decent showing in Week 15, after several really strong weeks. I’ll try to do better this week. Here is the Week 15 column: fantasy-preview-week-15.
One side note for this week: You can’t have 2 teams going in more opposite directions than the Chargers and Bills. Vegas can’t make the line big enough, the Bills could have the ball for more than 40 minutes, and this game could swing some matchups this week. If you’re going up against Allen, Cook, or Diggs, good luck. Play your Bills. All of them. Don’t play your Chargers. Any of them. Thank me later.
QB:
Elite options this week - Hurts and Allen; the analysis starts below these 2.
Rides and Sleepers:
QB Ride of the Week: Justin Fields (vs. ARI). Fields struggled last week at the Browns and their tough defense, but that doesn’t make him unique. I like him to bounce back in a big way at home this week vs. the Cardinals, whose below-average defense has allowed the 7th most fantasy points per game (FPPG) to QBs and the third most TD passes (26) on the season. The Bears (via CAR) are likely to own a top 2 pick in April’s draft, and Fields is auditioning to remain as the team’s starter. He should make a good case this week.
Other Rides:
Baker Mayfield (vs. JAC). Mayfield is ranked outside the Top 10 this week and that’s too low. He's probably playing the best football of his career, and has put up at least 19 fantasy points in 5 of his last 8 games. Meanwhile, have you seen the Jaguars’ pass defense the past month? They’ve gotten lit up and have really fallen off. On the season, they’ve now allowed the 3rd most FPPG to QBs. If you’re rolling out Mayfield this week, do so with confidence.
A few more QBs ranked inside the top 15 that I think have a good chance to outperform their rankings this week are Tua (vs. DAL) and D. Prescott (@MIA), in what could easily be a shootout, M. Stafford (vs. NO), and it feels like cheating, but P. Mahomes (vs. LV). Mahomes hasn’t given us a vintage game in quite a while, but the Raiders often bring out the best in him.
QB Sleeper of the Week: Joe Flacco (@HOU). Flacco is slinging it, and while he’s thrown his share of picks, he’s also putting up some serious numbers., He’s had at least 20 fantasy points and 2 passing TDs in each of his 3 starts, and the Houston pass defense is another one that has fallen off significantly over the second half of the season.
Other Sleepers:
Geno Smith (@TEN). He’s expected to return this week after missing the past 2 games with a group injury, and when we last saw Geno, he went toe to toe with Dak and was the QB1 on the week. The Seahawks should be flying high off of their huge comeback win on Monday night, and they’ll be facing a Titans’ team that has nothing to play for. Geno has great weapons and should put up a QB1 type of week.
Are you in a Superflex? Other lower-ranked QBs that I like this week include N. Mullens (vs. DET) and G. Minshew (@ATL).
Fades:
QB Fade of the Week: Jordan Love (@CAR). I know the Panthers are 2-12, but they’ve been a bad matchup for QBs for most of the year. Look for Green Bay to run it a lot in this game and especially with Christian Watson (hamstring) doubtful and Jayden Reed (toe) questionable. The Panthers have allowed the 4th fewest FPPG and the second fewest passing yards to opposing QBs. Love has been up and down of late and I don’t see him putting up a lot of points this week.
Other Fades:
Kyler Murray (@CHI). Don’t look now, but the Bears have become an unfavorable matchup for QBs, and especially in leagues that penalize interceptions. Yes, they broke down in the 4th quarter last week, but they’ve picked off 6 passes in the past 4 games and have been a stingy defense during that stretch. On the flip side, Kyler has struggled the past couple of weeks, and is tough to trust right now.
Sam Howell (@NYJ). He got benched at the Rams last week, but is expected to be back as the starter this week. The Jets have been the single worst QB matchup all year, and have yielded the fewest FPPG and the second fewest passing yards and passing TDs to opposing QBs on the season. They’re especially tough at home. Hard pass.
Other fades: R. Wilson (vs. NE), D. Carr (@LAR), and A. O’Connell (@KC, and yes, last week was a fluke),
RB:
Elite options - CMC, A. Kamara, and K. WIlliams; the analysis this week starts below these 3.
Rides and Sleepers:
RB Ride of the Week: James Cook (@LAC). Cook is coming off the best game of his young career (and one of the top RB performances of the season with 35 fantasy points vs. Dallas), and in the last 4 games Cook is averaging 22 fantasy points. That big uptick in production coincides with the Bills making the switch from Ken Dorsey to Joe Brady as OC. Cook’s ascent is half the story here. The other half is the Chargers’ woeful descent into oblivion, capped off by last week’s historically abysmal performance. LA has allowed the second most receptions and receiving yards to RBs, which is good news for Cook, and the Bills should be able to move the ball at will.
Other Rides:
Kenneth Walker (@TEN, and assuming he plays). Walker looked like he was shot out of a cannon on Monday night, and did plenty of damage with some very impressive running against Philadelphia’s top-ranked run defense. The sledding should be easier against a Titans’ unit that has really fallen off since standout DT Jeffrey Simmons went down with an injury. Walker is ranked as the RB19 this week and I think that’s way too low. I have him as a Top 10 play.
Breece Hall (vs. WAS). It’s been a long time since I recommended any Jet in this column. Well, good things happen when the Commanders come to town. Yes, they’re the 32nd ranked pass defense, but you can also run on them, with Kyren Williams being the most recent example last week. The Commanders have allowed the 6th most FPPG to RBs and at long last, Hall should be in for one of his best games of the season.
Derrick Henry (vs. SEA). Am I crazy? Henry set records for futility last week against the Texans, a team he has absolutely demolished throughout his career. Well, he’s a prideful guy and I don’t think he wants to go down like that. Henry’s days in Tennessee may be coming to an end and I think he’ll bounce back this week against a Seattle defense that’s traveling across the country on a short week, and might not be able to handle a battering ram. They’ve allowed the 5th most FPPG to RBs this year, and are tied for the second most rushing TDs surrendered to the position. The King is a good bet to find the end zone.
Other RBs ranked inside the Top 24 this week who I especially like: J. Gibbs (@MIN), I. Pacheco (vs. LV), E. Elliott (@DEN, who have allowed the second most FPPG to RBs, and he should again dominate touches), A. Jones (@CAR, in a plus matchup), C. Hubbard (vs. GB), D. Achane (vs. DAL), and D. Swift (vs. NYG).
RB Sleeper of the Week: D’Onta Foreman (v. ARI, assuming he plays as he is now listed as questionable with a personal matter). This is certainly risky, after he ran for -6 yards on just 6 carries last week. You math whizzes out there will quickly calculate that his average was -1 yards per carry. Well, that was at Cleveland, and this week the Bears have the single most favorable matchup for RBs, the Cardinals. They’ve allowed the most FPPG to RBs and while it’s tough to gauge usage in this 3-headed backfield, I like Foreman’s chances to lead the group this week. If you’re stuck at RB, I think you can also consider Roschon Johnson this week and he’s a fine start if Foreman is out. [SUNDAY NOTE: FOREMAN IS NOT EXPECTED TO PLAY]
Other Sleepers:
Gus Edwards (@SF). Wait, am I really recommending an RB against the 49ers? I am. Their defensive front is pretty banged up, and the Cardinals had plenty of success running on them last week. The Ravens bring a big-boy rushing game into town and will want to slow this game down if they can, and Gus should lead their ground attack. I like his chances to find the end zone in this game.
Najee Harris (vs. CIN). I’m always nervous recommending him this season, and this week is no exception. The Steelers have lost 3 straight, their offense is sputtering badly, and Harris is coming off a dismal Week 15 outing. So what gives? Why am I recommending so many backs coming off of a bad week? Well, because you an’t overreact to every bad performance. Harris had one of his best games of the season against the Bengals back in Week 12 (99 yards and a TD), which was also the last game the Steelers won. I think Jaylen Warren is also an OK play this week, if you need him.
If you’re stuck and need to plug an RB2 or Flex into your lineup this week, here are some RBs ranked outside the Top 30 for the week who I think you can consider: J. McKinnon (vs. LV), C. Brown (@PIT), and T. Allgeier (vs. IND). And if you need to dig really deep, I think L. Murray (@LAC) could see some extended garbage-time run, and might fall into the end zone for you too.
Fades:
RB Fade of the Week: Austin Ekeler (vs. BUF). It’s hard to believe it’s come to this, but I’d seriously consider sitting him this week, with your season on the line. Last week the Chargers and their star RB hit rock bottom. Or did they? They’ve got one of the lowest implied totals of the week, and there’s no reason to think that this game will be competitive, or that the Chargers will score much. Meanwhile, Ekeler has failed to top 7 fantasy points in 4 of his last 5 games, and the Chargers are sharing the work. He’s been unstartable for more than a month—so it’s definitely OK to un-start him.
Other Fades:
Bijan Robinson (vs. IND). Is there a more maddening player in fantasy? Or maybe I should ask, is there a more maddening coach? We know Bijan has the talent, and could be an elite receiver out of the backfield if given the targets, but the inconsistent usage and lack of competent QB play has led to very mixed results in 2023. Last week was a prime example, as Bijan saw just 8 touches in what should have been a plum matchup against the Panthers. The matchup is favorable again (the Colts have allowed the 4th most FPPG to RBs), and it’s hard to sit him. Just know what you’re in for—uncertainty.
Saquon Barkley (@PHI). He should see enough usage to be serviceable, but with the Eagles coming home on a 3 game losing streak, this could get ugly. The Eagles demolished the Giants 2 different times last year, and I’m worried this is going to be another one of those games where the Giants fall way behind, and mostly abansdon the run. The Eagles have allowed the fewest FPPG to RBs this season, and Barkley hasn’t topped 10 fantasy points in his last 3 regular season games vs. the Eagles. Pass.
Jerome Ford (@HOU). Remember last year, when the Texans were the single best matchup for RBs? Well, times have changed. They’re now a bad matchup. They haven’t allowed an RB to find the end zone in 5 weeks and they completely stymied the Titans’ backs last week. Ford struggled against the Bears’ front last week and I think he’ll be in for tough sledding again this week.
More Fades: J. Taylor and Z. Moss (@ATL), J. Conner (@CHI, which suddenly has a very strong defense), A. Gibson (@NYJ), and Z. White (@KC).
WR:
Elite options - For this week, Hill, Jefferson, Lamb, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and A.J. Brown; the analysis starts below these 5.
Rides and Sleepers:
WR Ride of the Week: Stefon Diggs (@LAC). Fantasy managers the world over have filed a missing persons report for the talented Mr. Diggs. Seriously. He hasn’t had a Top 10 weekly finish at his position since way back in Week 9, and he’s finished outside the Top 40 WRs (and had less than 7 fantasy points) in 4 of his last 5 games. I know, I know. That’s hard to believe after he got off to such a fast start this season, but sadly, it’s all true. Well, I’m here to tell you that the suffering ends this week! The Chargers are just what the doctor ordered. They’ve allowed the 3rd most FPPG to WRs, just got absolutely torched by Aidan O’Connell and the Vegas WRs, and Diggs is way past overdue. Enjoy…
Other Rides:
Mike Evans AND Chris Godwin (vs. JAC). You know who else can’t cover receivers? The Jaguars. They’ve been lit up during their 3 game losing streak, and a red-hot Baker Mayfield and his talented WR duo won’t give the Jaguars much of an opportunity to regroup on the road. Godwin is risky - his monster performance last week came out of nowhere. But he’s done it before and I think both of these playmakers will be busy in what could be a back-and-forth type game.
D.K. Metcalf (@TEN). The Seahawks need this game, and Metcalf has hit for at least one big pass play in each of the last 3 weeks. I like his chances to find the end zone this week against a banged-up Titans secondary, in a game the Seahawks have to have.
Tee Higgins (@PIT). Higgins has been hard to trust this season. He’s only scored TDs in 2 games all year, but with 2 scores n each of those. One of those games was last week, when Higgins stepped up after Ja’Marr Chase went down with a shoulder injury. Chase is expected to miss this game, which bodes well for Higgins. The Steelers can struggle vs. perimeter receivers, and Higgins should see plenty of volume this week.
Here are some other WRs ranked inside the Top 25 this week who I think should outperform their weekly rankings: D. London (vs. IND, and yes, he’s at home this week and for him that’s apparently all that matters), R. Rice (vs. LV, and boy has he stepped up), and G. Wilson (v. WAS, and I can’t believe I have 2 Jets as starts this week, but that’s what the Commanders’ defense will do to a guy), J. Addison (@DET), and A. Cooper (@HOU).
WR Sleeper of the Week: Dontayvion Wicks (@CAR, and assuming he plays). The matchup is a tough one (CAR has allowed the 4th fewest FPPG to WRs), but Wicks was a popular waiver add this week and is a trendy sleeper as well for 2 main reasons: (1) Christian Watson and Jayden Reed have yet to practice this week and both could miss the game, and (2) Wicks has been trending up and is coming off his busiest game of the season (6-97 on 7 targets).
Other Sleepers:
JSN (@TEN) and J. Downs (@ATL) are 2 rookies I think you can =consider as a WR3 or Flex this week. Both have good matchups, and Downs would clearly benefit if M. Pittman is unable to clear the concussion protocol for this game.
Tyler Boyd (@PIT). Like Higgins, he should benefit with increased targets this week.
A few other WRs who are ranked outside the Top 35 this week and who I think you can consider if your’e desperate are : J. Palmer (vs. BUF, but I mean you need to be pretty desperate), A. Thielen (vs. GB, whose pass defense has fallen apart), and G. Davis (@LAC).
Fades:
WR Fade of the Week: Davante Adams (@KC). I had real trouble finding a higher end WR to fade this week. Start Adams if you have him, unless you’re really loaded at WR. The Chiefs have been tough on opposing WRs (8th fewest FPPG allowed), and they handled Adams decently well in the first outing, at Las Vegas (5 for 73 on 7 targets). I’d expect something similar this week.
Other Fades:
Zay Flowers (@SF). He’s nursing a foot injury, and is coming off a quiet week. I don’t like him much in this difficult matchup.
Terry McLaurin (@NYJ). He’s coming off his biggest yardage total of the season (141), but the Jets are just so tough on opposing WRs (the fewest FPPG allowed), and McLaurin has been very hard to trust this year. Coming into last week he was coming off a zero catch effort the game before, and was held to 50 yards or less in 3 straight games before that.
Other WRs I’d try to avoid this week: NE WRs (@DEN), J.Jeudy (vs. NE), J. Meyers (@KC), and G. Pickens (vs. CIN).
TE:
Elite options - Kelce, LaPorta, and Hockenson; the analysis starts below these 3.
Rides and Sleepers:
TE Ride of the Week: David Njoku (@HOU). Njoku has exploded in the last 2 weeks, with 16 catches for more than 200 receiving yards and 3 TDs, and there’s no reason to think he won’t keep it going this week. Flacco is airing it out, and Njoku saw a season high 14 targets last week.
Other Rides:
Jake Ferguson (@MIA). Ride the hot hand, part 2. Ferguson has been busy lately, with at least 5 catches on at least 8 targets in 3 straight games. This game could be high scoring, and Ferguson figures to again be an important component of the Dallas attack.
Isaiah Likely (@SF). Ride the hot hand, part 3. Likely might be the only legit TE handcuff in the history of fantasy football. Since Mark Andrews got hurt, Likely has back-to-back games with at least 15 fantasy points. It’s a tough matchup, but I could see Lamar looking Likely’s way quite a bit on Monday night.
Trey McBride (@CHI). Ride the hot hand, part 4. McBride is another TE who has been on a tear. In his case, it goes all the way back to Week 8, and he’s the TE3 over those 8 weeks. The Bears are a favorable matchup for TEs, and with Hollywood Brown iffy, McBride could be in for a big target share.
TE Sleeper of the Week: Hunter Henry (@DEN, assuming he plays). Henry is nursing a knee injury, so keep an eye on practice reports. He’s scored 3 TDs in his last 2 games, and is clearly a favorite target of Bailey Zappe. To make matters better, the Broncos have allowed the most FPPG and TDs (9) to TEs. [SUNDAY NOTE: HENRY IS OUT - Consider Mike Gesicki as a sleeper]
Other Sleepers:
Tucker Kraft (@CAR). Kraft has at least 4 catches and 50 yards in backl-to-back games, and he’s another Packer who figures to benefit from injuries to the receiving corps. It’s a tough matchup, but he should see a good share of targets and is a threat to score as he did last week.
Darren Waller (@PHI). He should be busy, against a bad pass defense, with his team playing catch-up.
If you’re in need at the position, I think you can also consider: P. Freiermuth (vs. CIN, who has allowed the second most FPPG to TEs, and gave up a big game to Freiermuth in Week 12), C. Otton (vs. JAC), and K. Pitts (vs. IND).
Fades:
TE Fade of the Week: George Kittle (vs. BAL). I’m not recommending that you bench Kittle. Start him if you have him. The 49ers will try to exploit their best matchups in this game against a very tough defense, and I don’t think Kittle is one of their best matchups. The Ravens have allowed the 3rd fewest FPPG to TEs this year, and just 3 TDs to the position. I think this will be a sub-par week for Kittle.
Other Fades:
Dalton Schultz (vs. CLE). Schultz returned last week and had a decent game, but the matchup this week is a bad one. The Browns have allowed the 4th fewest points to TEs and the fewest catches and yards to the position. With Stroud iffy, I think Schultz is a risky play this week.
Dallas Goedert (vs. NYG). The Eagles should have little trouble scoring on the Giants, but Goedert isn’t one of their better matchups in this contest. He hasn’t topped 4 catches or 30 yards since coming back from injury, which makes him a weaker play.
Other Fades: C. Kmet (vs. ARI), N. Fant (@TEN), and DEN TEs (vs. NE).
PK and D/ST Streamers: See the Week 16 Waiver Wire column: Week 16 Waiver Wire .
That’s that! Good luck to all in Week 16!
